Synopsis
The
author, Gavin Murtagh, has visions of making Marnoch into a series of
novels, beginning with Brambleton Manor. In this first book of the
series, set in the late 1950’s, the main character, Gordon Marnoch,
is introduced to readers, who will hopefully find his exploits as
entertaining as that of a Rebus novel. But even though Marnoch is
another Scot and is an ex-serviceman and police officer that is where
the similarities end.
Marnoch
did not set out to become a sometimes private detective, it found
him by circumstance. After the premature death of his wife, Marie, he
eventually finds he needs to be more occupied to overcome the pain of
her loss. At the same time a young girl goes missing from the small
town where the Marnoch’s had intended to make their final home
together. After accepting the temporary responsibility of looking
after a local woman’s Labrador, Marnoch eventually finds evidence
pointing to where the girl has been taken. To his surprise he also
discovers that the girl’s family originate from near to his own and
Marie’s origins in the North of Scotland. What follows is an ever
twisting path of unexpected events that involve many interesting
characters both inside the Brambleton Manor Estate, where the Jarvis
family had been in residence for the past five-hundred years, and the
nearby township. Marnoch could be criticised for acting alone as he
does throughout but the author deliberately leaves the question open
to readers as to what they would do under each circumstance, where
one slip-up could seriously jeopardize the rescue and further
endanger the missing lass. The situation is further complicated by
the arrival of a detective sergeant to lead the investigation and who
bears a major grudge against Marnoch. He discovers that an unholy
alliance exists between the police officer and a member of the
aristocratic Jarvis family. Potential danger lurks on every dark
corner as Marnoch realises too late he has been lured into and
finally trapped inside a labyrinth below Brambleton Manor Estate.
However, a major search has begun and others are fast closing in to
give assistance. But will they be in time to save him?
